Huh?
The two children in the back seat were messing around, but Su Banxia didn’t take any of it in, only occasionally brushing them off with a few words.
Su Guoguo, being thick-skinned, naturally didn’t notice anything off, but Su Hao immediately picked up on Su Banxia’s unusual behavior and couldn’t help asking softly, “Why didn’t Uncle Pei come today?”
At the familiar name, Su Banxia’s movements faltered, and she accidentally hit the brakes. Off balance, the two children nearly tumbled forward.
Su Hao held onto Su Guoguo tightly, keeping her from hitting her head.
“Mom?”
Su Guoguo looked up at the front, confusion in her eyes.
“Sorry.”
Su Banxia lowered her head and said weakly.
Su Hao frowned, unconsciously glancing at her again. The two children exchanged looks in private, as if trying to figure out what was on Su Banxia’s mind.
After returning home, Su Banxia stared at the empty house, feeling even more restless. She grabbed a mop and went back and forth, cleaning every corner of the place.
“Brother, Mom’s acting really weird today.”
Su Guoguo was a bit worried.
“Can’t you see what’s going on?”
Su Hao shot her a sidelong glance, his disdain obvious.
Both born from the same mother—how could their IQs be so far apart?
Seeing the contempt in Su Hao’s eyes, Su Guoguo shook her head without hesitation.
“So dumb!”
Su Hao sighed helplessly, cleared his throat, and slowly asked, “Who usually picks us up?”
“Mom and Uncle Pei.”
Su Guoguo answered in a childish voice.
“And today?”
“Just Mom!”
Su Guoguo suddenly caught on and clamped her hand over her mouth.
Su Hao shrugged and went back to fiddling with the model in his hands: “Figure out what that means yourself.”
As Su Guoguo thought it over, tears suddenly poured down like a spring.
The sudden change startled Su Hao: “What are you doing all of a sudden?”
“Mom likes Uncle Pei, and she’s going to abandon us soon!”
The more Su Guoguo thought about it, the more upset she got, and her tears flowed even harder.
Su Hao: “...”
Were all women’s minds this uniquely twisted?
“Brother, we’re about to be kids without a mom. They say kids without a mom are like weeds, but Guoguo doesn’t want to be a weed!”
Su Guoguo was full of grievance.
“How could Mom abandon us?”
Su Hao’s heart sank, but a trace of sadness crept in too.
Su Guoguo wiped her tears and sobbed, “Uncle Pei’s gone for just one day, and Mom misses him that much. But we’re gone for a long time, and she doesn’t react at all.”
Hearing Su Guoguo’s words, Su Hao thought it made some sense and felt a pang of loss himself.
Even if Su Hao was more mature than other kids his age, he was still just a little child at heart. Soon, both little ones were more upset than the other.
Su Banxia was in the middle of cleaning when she suddenly heard crying. She stopped what she was doing and hurried over.
“What’s wrong?”
“Mom, are you going to abandon me and brother soon?”
Su Guoguo asked between sobs.
Su Banxia froze, caught between laughter and tears: “How could Mom ever abandon you? You’ll always be the treasures of my heart!”
“Uncle Pei wasn’t here today, and you were really unhappy. But when me and brother are gone for a day, you don’t seem to miss us that much.”
There was a hint of reproach in Su Guoguo’s voice.
Hearing this, Su Banxia’s heart trembled. Was her behavior really that obvious?
Even a little kid could see through it!
“Mom, are you going to leave us soon? Me and brother don’t want to be weeds—we want to be treasures.”
Su Guoguo was terribly upset, reaching out to tug at Su Banxia’s sleeve, her eyes full of pleading.
Seeing Su Guoguo like this, Su Banxia immediately crouched down and wiped their tears: “Even if Mom gave up the whole world, I would never, ever abandon you.”
“Really?”
Su Guoguo’s eyes lit up, a clear sparkle shining through her tear-filled gaze.
“Silly child, you’re flesh and blood from my body. For you, Mom would give up anything, so stop overthinking.”
Su Banxia comforted them.
If it weren’t for the fear of losing these two precious ones, why would she have kept their true origins hidden all this time?
With Su Banxia’s reassurance, the children felt a bit better, but deep down, they still harbored a small grudge against Su Banxia and Pei Shaoze getting close.
After finally coaxing the two kids to sleep, Su Banxia was so exhausted she could barely straighten her back. Seeing the bucket and mop on the stairs, she let out a bitter laugh.
Her emotions today had really gotten out of hand.
With that thought, she stepped forward calmly, put the mop and bucket back in place, took a quick shower, and went to bed.
Maybe because she was too tired, she fell asleep instantly, not even noticing when Pei Shaoze came back.
Pei Shaoze watched Su Banxia sleeping peacefully, and a faint, handsome smile curled at the corners of his mouth.
He lay down quietly beside her, gently pulling her into his arms as they drifted off.
The next day, when Su Banxia woke up, Pei Shaoze was already sitting in the living room downstairs. Seeing him reading the newspaper there, she paused mid-step.
“You... came back?”
“Mm.”
Pei Shaoze gave her a cold glance, his attitude haughty.
Su Banxia pouted in annoyance but ultimately said nothing.
The atmosphere at the table was strange. Su Guoguo, faced with Pei Shaoze’s affection, felt an odd resistance and instead joined Su Hao in fawning over Su Banxia.
Pei Shaoze was left out, a hint of anger simmering on his face. He had planned to use the kids’ closeness to make Su Banxia uncomfortable, but in the end, it was him who ended up embarrassed!
With a surge of irritation, Pei Shaoze wolfed down his meal, got up, and drove off to the company.
Watching his resolute back, Su Banxia shook her head helplessly. His bad temper was just like a child who never grew up.
After breakfast, Su Banxia dropped the kids off at school before heading back to the company. Before she could even settle in, Su Sinian’s call came through.
“Big Miss?”
Su Banxia answered the phone, her brow furrowing slightly.
Su Sinian gripped the receiver tightly, obvious displeasure on her face: “Su Banxia, you really do have some tricks up your sleeve!”
“What do you mean?”
Su Banxia was baffled. Getting a call from her first thing in the morning was really bad luck.
“Don’t play innocent with me. I know exactly what kind of person you are!”
Su Sinian gritted her teeth, her face full of resentment. Yesterday, in front of Pei Shaoze, she had been torn down to nothing, and all the pride she’d built up over the years had been completely shattered!
