Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Eldest Brother of the Qiao Family Comes Knocking

Over the next few days, the trading center didn’t open again. Shen Yunyun wasn’t surprised at all. Last time, there was a fifteen-day gap, then ten days. This time, it might be five days, or starting from now, her trading center might open every night. She stopped worrying about it—she couldn’t control it anyway—and focused all her energy on renovating the courtyard. The courtyard renovation was almost done. Once the flowers and trees were planted today, it would be finished. The interior decoration was nearly complete too. Today, the cabinets were being installed, and after that, it would be time for appliances and furniture to move in. Then she could finally move out of the basement. Watching the workers busy planting trees and flowers, Shen Yunyun felt a surge of happiness. The small courtyard had been arranged exactly to her liking. But she never expected to see Qiao Pengyu, the eldest Qiao brother, at her own doorstep. When Qiao Pengyu saw how radiant and spirited Shen Yunyun looked, full of energy and vitality, he thought of his own family—unable to eat or sleep, everything going wrong—and a wave of anger surged inside him. “Qiao Yunyun!” Shen Yunyun looked up, spotted Qiao Pengyu, rolled her eyes, and muttered, “What a nuisance.” Then she turned and walked away. Qiao Pengyu immediately caught up to her, fuming. “Yunyun, haven’t you caused enough trouble?” Seeing him had already ruined her good mood, and she rolled her eyes so hard her eyelids nearly cramped. “Mr. Qiao, do you think I’m causing trouble?” Shen Yunyun’s gaze was firm and cold. Meeting her icy stare and hearing her address him as “Mr. Qiao” instead of “big brother,” Qiao Pengyu’s anger flared even more. He snapped, “Come back with me.” “Why should I? I have nothing to do with the Qiao family anymore. Don’t tell me you think I’m still sulking, trying to get your attention? I don’t go by Qiao anymore. My surname is Shen. I’m Shen Yunyun.” She emphasized her name heavily, wanting him to get it straight. Qiao Pengyu’s face turned red with rage. “How dare you?” “I’ve already changed it, and you’re asking how I dare? If I didn’t dare, how could I have changed it?” Honestly, he was out of his mind—seriously unhinged. “Changing your surname is a grave disrespect. Do you know that Mom can’t eat or sleep because of you, plagued by nightmares, and Dad’s company is facing nothing but setbacks? Come back with me. If you sincerely apologize to Mom and Dad, I’ll convince them to let you change your surname back. You’ll still be the Qiao family’s young lady.” “Go back? What are you thinking? Even if you begged me to return, I wouldn’t. And you want me to apologize to them? Are you incapable of understanding human speech?” Shen Yunyun let out a cold laugh. “Yunyun!” Qiao Pengyu’s chest ached with fury. He remembered her not being like this before. She used to be obedient and sensible. How had she suddenly changed so much? Just then, Tang Yu arrived. Before he could even park his car, he saw a man grabbing and pulling at his dear lady, the disgust on her face unmistakably real. Without fully stopping the car, he unbuckled his seatbelt, flung the door open, and sprinted over, throwing a punch in one fluid motion. Caught off guard, Qiao Pengyu took the hit, winced in pain, and let go. Touching his swollen, handsome face, he recognized the man and grew even more furious. “Yunyun, who is he?” “None of your damn business.” Shen Yunyun turned to Tang Yu and asked, “Did your hand hurt from hitting him?” Tang Yu immediately grinned, showing his teeth, and said, “Nope, not at all.” He subtly shook his hand behind his back. Protecting his lady was his duty, no matter what. What was a little pain compared to that?
