On the way back, An Ruo heard that someone had been beaten up in the elevator, and it was said to be Supervisor Ding. She felt an inexplicable sense of relief. Earlier, she had been afraid that Supervisor Ding would rush out to stop her, but upon hearing the news of his beating, she quickened her pace.
Lunchtime was ample, but An Ruo only ate two steamed buns. When she returned to the Planning Department, she was still the only one there. However, besides her, there was also a mysterious figure.
A man stood by her desk, flipping through something with his back to her. He had broad shoulders and a tall frame, making it hard to see his face. He wasn’t wearing a work uniform, so he probably wasn’t an employee of the company.
“Hello, can I help you with something?”
Shen Xiaoxing stiffened, glancing sideways and turning his face away. To avoid being seen, he put down the file in his hand and hurriedly fled through another exit.
An Ruo stood frozen in place, watching the suspicious man scurry away. Coming to her senses, she quickly notified the security office: “There’s a thief…”
The Planning Department erupted in noise. The man dodged and hid, barely managing to take the elevator straight to the CEO’s office.
Gu Chao was sitting by a coffee table laden with food, leisurely eating from a bowl. When the man entered, he raised an eyebrow and smirked. “Someone chasing you with a knife?”
The man pressed his thin lips together and opened the massive LCD surveillance screen in the office. Dozens of security guards were seen searching every corner of the company with weapons, hunting for the “thief.”
“Do you really need to make such a big scene when you’re just visiting your own company?”
Shen Xiaoxing leaned against the desk. “Get these people out of here.”
Gu Chao gave an OK gesture and called the secretary’s pager, instructing him to call off the security search to avoid causing internal chaos.
“Aren’t you here to see your little sister-in-law? Why are you sneaking around like a rat, looking so pathetic?”
“Your sister-in-law called for someone to catch me.”
Gu Chao froze for a moment, then burst into uncontrollable laughter.
Shen Xiaoxing turned his head, shooting him a dark look. The latter quickly shut up and continued stuffing food into his mouth.
After learning the full story, Gu Chao rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “So, this Ding Yu openly harassed your little sister-in-law, and you beat him up and sent him to the hospital?”
Shen Xiaoxing walked straight to the desk, lounging lazily against the chair back as he flipped through some documents that required his personal review.
Seeing his lack of action, Gu Chao pressed his hands on the desk, leaning his tall frame forward. “Want me to promote your little sister-in-law?”
He frowned. “Maybe you two will develop feelings over time, and she’ll become the madam of Lanzhen. She can’t stay a grunt forever, right?”
“Not for now.”
It was clear that the girl was serious about her current job. He didn’t want to cause trouble—if he promoted her now, it would not only invite gossip but also make her suspicious of his identity.
“As for that Ding Yu, should we fire him?”
“Why fire him?”
Gu Chao wiped his nose with his index finger. “He has impure intentions toward your little sister-in-law. Shouldn’t we fire him and never hire him again?”
“Ding Yu has poor character, but his work efficiency is decent. Lanzhen is in a period of needing talent, and I’m counting on him to make money for me.”
“Seriously, bro? Since when did you become so magnanimous?”
Shen Xiaoxing remained silent, playing with a custom fountain pen in his hand. He lifted his deep eyes to the surveillance screen, where dozens of small frames showed every corner of the company. Even so, he could still spot the girl’s figure.

Although Supervisor Ding was beaten badly, the person who hit him knew his limits, and the injuries weren’t severe. He returned to work the next day.
When An Ruo handed in her work documents, Supervisor Ding’s gaze toward her was both greedy and fearful, eventually turning into anger.
“You’re something else, An Ruo. Really impressive, getting your husband to come all this way to beat me up.” Supervisor Ding could only vent his frustration. “You’re tough. Just don’t let me catch you slipping!”
An Ruo was baffled by his words. The person who beat him was her husband?
How could that be? Shen Xiaoxing was blind and relied on a wheelchair to get around. How could he have shown up here?
Supervisor Ding recalled yesterday in the elevator, when the man turned his cold face, his eyes clearly murderous, and kicked him in the stomach.
The man kicked him again and again, stepping on his chest and threatening, “Touch her again, and I’ll chop off your hands!”
“Who… who are you!?”
The man brushed off his pant legs and looked down at him. “An Ruo’s husband.”
She really was married!
All he did was touch her a couple of times, and she had to bring her husband to come after him?
The murderous look in Shen Xiaoxing’s eyes was so fierce that Supervisor Ding still felt a lingering fear. If someone hadn’t shown up, he might have wet himself.
An Ruo was restless all morning, Supervisor Ding’s words replaying in her mind. She thought back to the figure she saw in the office and the fleeting glimpse at the wine club, and all her suspicions pointed to Shen Xiaoxing.
Was he really unable to walk, or was he faking it?
“An Ruo.” Supervisor Bai tapped the desk, snapping her out of her thoughts.
The girl jolted back to reality. “Supervisor Bai… is there something?”
“A major client suddenly appeared out of nowhere. The CEO urgently needs an assistant from the Planning Department. I think you’re a good fit. Pack up quickly and report to the CEO.”
An Ruo was stunned, not reacting for a moment. “Me?”
“This is a golden opportunity for a promotion. The CEO personally selected you. Seize it firmly and don’t slack off!”
