Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Battle Continues

Zhang Wei carefully put away Wartortle, his gaze shifting to the Bellossom across from him. Though Bellossom looked a bit battered, its overall condition was still decent. He silently calculated the Pokémon in his possession—this Wartortle was undoubtedly the highest level and strongest, his starter Pokémon. As for the others, they were all raised later, with the strongest barely over level 20, likely no match for the opposing Bellossom, especially since the opponent also had a Gogoat. To avoid an embarrassing defeat, Zhang Wei decided to use the Pokémon his family had given him, specially prepared to protect him.

He cautiously opened the Poké Ball, and a majestic Charizard appeared before him. Wen Qi was surprised to see another starter Pokémon, a Charizard, and quickly checked its information.

Pokémon: Charizard Level: 40 Type: Fire Ability: Blaze (Boosts Fire-type moves when HP is low) Talent: Deep Yellow Moves: Scratch (Proficient), Growl (Proficient), Ember (Proficient), Smokescreen (Proficient), Heat Wave (Proficient), Dragon Claw (Proficient), Dragon Breath (Proficient), Fire Fang (Proficient), Slash (Proficient), Flamethrower (Proficient), Scary Face (Proficient), Dragon Pulse (Proficient)

Seeing this Charizard’s data, Zhang Wei knew it wasn’t something he could have raised himself—it was a powerful asset from his family. He glanced at Bellossom, thinking that if he sent it into battle, it would likely be instantly defeated by the Charizard. So, he decisively recalled Bellossom and said to Gogoat, “This time, you’re up.”

The battle began, and Zhang Wei immediately ordered Charizard to launch a fierce Flamethrower attack. Charizard spread its massive wings and shot a blazing stream of fire straight at Gogoat. However, Wen Qi’s Gogoat displayed astonishing agility, leaping swiftly to dodge the Flamethrower. Instead of retreating, Gogoat counterattacked. Wen Qi calmly commanded it to use Tail Whip, emitting a peculiar sound that left Charizard dizzy and lowered its defense. Then, Gogoat leaped high and struck Charizard with a Razor Leaf formed from sharp leaves. Though Charizard tried to evade, its reaction was sluggish due to the Tail Whip, and it was hit. The injury wasn’t severe, but Charizard felt the pain, its eyes growing fiercer as it prepared a more intense assault.

Zhang Wei ordered Charizard to use Dragon Claw for a close-range attack. Charizard lunged at Gogoat with its sharp claws, while Wen Qi coolly directed Gogoat to counter with Leaf Blade. The two Pokémon clashed fiercely in midair, producing a deafening sound. The duel dragged on, with both sides showing tenacity and skill. But as time passed, Charizard began to tire. Its movements slowed, and its attacks weakened, while Gogoat maintained its vigor and stamina. In a final intense exchange, Gogoat, relying on its superior endurance and precise strikes, landed a decisive hit on Charizard. Charizard collapsed in pain, unable to continue.

Wen Qi and Gogoat won the hard-fought battle. Zhang Wei stared at the fallen Charizard, filled with disappointment and frustration. He had never imagined his Charizard would lose to the opponent’s Gogoat. The Gogoat’s battle sense, stamina, and determination were exceptional, leaving him stunned. Wen Qi was equally surprised, never expecting his Gogoat to defeat the Charizard. He hugged Gogoat excitedly, and Gogoat nuzzled him happily.

Zhang Wei left the battlefield with a heavy heart, reflecting on his mistakes—perhaps underestimating Wen Qi or being overconfident. But the result was unchangeable. He silently accepted it, vowing not to repeat the same errors. Though the loss stung, he knew it was part of growing. He would learn from it and strive to improve. He said to Wen Qi, “I lost this time. I’ll challenge you again next time.” Then he turned and walked away.

Wen Qi watched Zhang Wei’s retreating figure, feeling a mix of emotions. He hadn’t expected to defeat such a strong opponent, deepening his understanding of his own strength and Gogoat’s abilities. At the same time, he recognized his shortcomings and the need to train and enhance his Pokémon further. Checking the time and finding it still early, he decided to visit the village chief. Before leaving, he left Bellossom at home to recover from its injuries. Mounting Gogoat, he soon arrived at the old chief’s residence.

“Village Chief, are you home? I’m bothering you again,” Wen Qi called out. The old chief’s voice came from inside: “I’m here, you little rascal. After fixing up the farm last time, you never came back. Are you looking down on my humble home?” Wen Qi quickly explained, “Of course not, Chief. I had to keep an eye on the farm after the repairs. I came as soon as I had time.” The old chief, smoking his pipe, said, “So what brings you here again, you brat? Don’t tell me it’s just to see me.” Wen Qi smiled. “I’m here to see you, of course. But I also have a small favor to ask.” The chief asked, “What is it now? Spit it out.” Wen Qi replied, “My farm is all set up, but I’m short on help. I’m looking to hire a few workers. Do you have any suitable recommendations, Chief?” The chief thought for a moment. “I can ask around. But do you have any requirements? And what about the pay?” Wen Qi answered, “Just hardworking and trustworthy people. The pay is five thousand a month, with room and board included.” The chief nodded. “Alright, I’ll see what I can do. You’re always causing me trouble, kid.” Wen Qi chuckled. “Don’t complain, Chief. I’ve got no choice. Please do your best to help me find some people.” The chief sighed. “Fine, I’ll think about it. Don’t be too lazy, kid. Running your farm properly is the real deal.” Wen Qi agreed. “Got it, Chief. I’ll work hard.”

The chief paused in thought, then spoke slowly. “You should know the villagers well enough, right? If it’s okay with you, could you prioritize those in need? They’ve had a tough time and could use more care.” Wen Qi considered it briefly and found no issue.
