Chapter 130: The Cat That Can See Them

Dark clouds shrouded the sky, rain soaking Chen Ge’s jacket as he crouched in front of the cat, his mind in a whirl.

He had just seen terror on that man’s face. Normally, if a man with a weapon gets pinned down, wouldn’t the first instinct be to fight back?

The lottery shop owner had cowered immediately, a stark contrast to before. This piqued Chen Ge’s curiosity—what exactly had he seen?

“When I pinned him down, a cold sensation spread through my eyes. It must have been the Yin Pupils at work.” The description of the Yin Pupils on the black phone had always been vague, and later, Zhang Ya had blown half of the Mirror Ghost’s body into his eyes. The Yin Pupils seemed to have undergone a second transformation, but Chen Ge couldn’t pinpoint exactly what had changed.

“I acted almost without thinking just now. Probably because I’ve been through too much lately, my nerves are wound too tight.” Since getting the black phone, Chen Ge hadn’t had a proper rest. Every day was either routine tasks or even more dangerous trial missions. But the effort paid off—at least the visitor count and positive reviews for the Horror House were skyrocketing.

After lingering in the alley for a while, Chen Ge noticed the cat wouldn’t let anyone near. He didn’t force it. Finding a spot to take shelter from the rain nearby, he planned to leave once it stopped.

He waited over ten minutes, but the heavy rain showed no sign of letting up.

In the dark back alley, Chen Ge used his phone to illuminate the corner. Water had pooled on the ground, and the cardboard box, soaked through, had torn open at the bottom.

He stepped closer and saw that the battered white cat could no longer hold on. It lay beside the four tiny kittens in the box, already cold.

“I saw it. I can’t just let it die.” Chen Ge took off his jacket, cradled the cats in it, and ran to the road to hail a cab to the nearest pet store.

Around ten o’clock, when the driver dropped him off at the store, a woman in a work uniform was just locking up.

“Wait!” Chen Ge didn’t even bother with an umbrella, rushing over with the jacket in his arms.

“Sorry, we’re closed. Come back tomorrow.” The woman stepped back, keeping her distance when she saw Chen Ge’s state.

“This cat won’t make it until tomorrow. Money’s not an issue—please save it.” Rain soaked Chen Ge’s clothes, making him look disheveled.

The woman glanced into his jacket. The white cat was covered in grime, with a long gash on its face. “A stray?”

“Yes.”

“Strays are wild, temperamental, and prone to biting. Judging by its condition, it probably got beaten for biting someone. Are you sure you want to save it?”

“Yes.” Chen Ge was decisive. “Some kids might have killed the kittens. The cat stayed by them, getting hit with bricks and bottles without leaving. It’s heartbreaking.”

“If you’re sure, come in.” The woman unlocked the door again and took Chen Ge’s jacket. “Those four kittens are beyond saving. If you really want to keep the big one, it’s best to bury the kittens near your home.”

“Thank you.” Chen Ge glanced at her name tag—she was the store manager, Zhao Wen.

The woman went into the back room to clean and treat the white cat.

Chen Ge sat in the front of the pet store, staring at the caged cats and dogs, who stared back.

Strangely, since Chen Ge entered, all the animals had been lying quietly in their cages, not making a sound.

“Is it something I’m carrying? Or because of Zhang Ya?” Chen Ge approached a nearby cage, and the cat inside cowered in the corner, trembling and curling into a ball.

With this comparison, Chen Ge found the white cat even more unusual.

When he first approached it, the cat hadn’t been afraid at all. Instead, it bared its teeth and claws, ready to fight him to the death.

“This stray might just surprise me.” The young man from Room 302 of Haiming Apartments had told Chen Ge that the Mirror Ghost had a weakness—it was afraid of cats. That was one reason Chen Ge decided to adopt the white cat.

Close to eleven, Zhao Wen came out of the back room holding the white cat, along with a small basket containing the four kittens. “I’m surprised. This cat is really beautiful. It’s a shame about the scar on its face—it’s too noticeable.”

Looking at the clean white cat in Zhao Wen’s arms, Chen Ge almost didn’t recognize it.

Its fur was pure white, without a single spot of color. Most striking were its eyes—one red, one blue.

“Such a pretty cat. I can’t figure out why the original owner would abandon it.” Chen Ge also found the cat stunning.

“I’m not trying to scare you, but you can’t just adopt strays casually. Especially ones like this, that look expensive and well-bred. The original owner might have abandoned it because they thought it was unlucky, or something happened.” Zhao Wen handed the cat to Chen Ge. “Anyway, if you adopt it, you need to take full responsibility. It has a lot of small wounds. Check its body daily to prevent infection.”

After paying, Chen Ge carried the basket and the cat back to New Century Park.

“This is your home now.” As soon as Chen Ge pushed open the Horror House’s barrier, the half-dead white cat perked up its ears.

“It reacted before even entering the house. This cat might actually be useful.” He set the cat down at the Horror House entrance, carried the basket with the dead kittens inside, and the cat meowed outside for a while before reluctantly following him in.

Chen Ge wanted to test the cat. He first led it through several of the house’s horror scenes.

The Female Ghost’s Toilet, Midnight Escape, and Zombie Resurrection Night—the cat behaved normally in all three.

But when Chen Ge lifted the floorboard to head to the Muyang High School scene, the cat’s fur stood on end. It blocked the stairs leading to the underground parking lot, stopping Chen Ge.

“The Muyang High School hidden mission isn’t finished yet. There might be bigger secrets inside.” Chen Ge didn’t know what the cat sensed, but the fact that it stopped him alone made him feel he hadn’t saved it for nothing.

He closed the floorboard and thought about picking up the cat, but it darted away, seeming to dislike human contact.

Carrying the basket, Chen Ge returned to the staff break room, and the cat followed.

It only calmed down once Chen Ge closed the break room door.

Jumping onto a chair, the cat spotted Little hiding under the table.

“You little rascal, always running off.” Chen Ge pulled Little out from under the table, holding it by the neck and shaking it in front of the cat. “This is one of us. Don’t hurt it.”

The cat showed no unusual reaction this time, as if it found the target too weak to bother with.

“It’s a vengeful spirit, at least. Shouldn’t it be too weak to be ignored by a cat?” Chen Ge rubbed Little’s head, inexplicably feeling sorry for it.
